in Fashion

As we all know, the fashion industry can be pretty cruel. Business owners and their marketers spend massive amounts of time and money trying to analyze women, understand their desires, and predict what will sell next. All of this effort just to figure out one thing: what is it that women really want?

Some people believe that women don’t actually want the things that are already on the market—that marketers just do some kind of voodoo, and with a sprinkle of magic, suddenly all women around the world are buying and wearing the same things. But that’s not true.

The reality is, we all want—or at least think we need—the things being mass produced. When environmental activists start speaking out, blaming businesses for producing too many clothes, too much plastic, too many things… it’s not because they’re being unreasonable. It’s because they see what’s coming. They know what happens to the planet when we keep wanting more and more stuff.

Stop Wanting

Why is it that you need a room full of clothes—not a closet, a whole room—just to feel like you have something to wear? And yet, somehow, you still say, “I have nothing to wear.” I promise you, that’s not funny. It’s actually kind of heartbreaking.

Do you know how much damage polyester does to the environment? Please, if you must buy something, at least try to choose cotton. Every little step matters.

“Not judging, but also… maybe think about your fabric choices.”

What Have I Done?

Let’s talk about your wardrobe. Take a quick look. Do you already have a few decent t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, or pants? If the answer is yes, then stop shopping. Seriously, those pieces can last you at least two years if you take care of them.

And if there are clothes you’re no longer wearing, don’t just toss them in the trash. Donate them. You probably already know where the homeless people in your city hang out—they would be grateful for what you no longer use.

Start the Economy That Matters

Skip the take-out coffee. Just leave home ten minutes earlier, sit down in a café, and enjoy your drink in an actual cup. You’ll help the environment and your own peace of mind.

Avoid going into shops just to see what’s new. That’s exactly what marketers are counting on. You think you’re browsing, but they know you’ll likely walk out with something you didn’t plan to buy. That’s how it works.

Feel the joy of slowing down and being present.

Forget about money for a second. Go buy some fruit, cook something simple at home, and nourish your body without feeding into the system of overconsumption.

Read More, Watch Less

Start reading books instead of watching TV shows. Most shows are filled with hidden advertisements pushing clothes, tech, food, lifestyle goals you don’t even know you’re absorbing. Without realizing it, you end up spending more and wanting things you didn’t even think about yesterday. Books? They don’t sell you things. They give you ideas. Inspiration. Peace.
